Lesson 12 Vocabulary

Please study these definitions with your child and practice using each word in a sentence. The students will be given a quiz on Friday that requires them to correctly match each vocabulary word to a sentence or definition.

1. deciphered – If you have figured out a message that is difficult to understand or that is written in code, then you have deciphered it.

2. mistaken – If you are wrong about something, you are mistaken.

3. catastrophe – A catastrophe is something really terrible that has happened.

4. fortunate – If you are fortunate, you are very lucky.

5. translate – If you translate something, you say or write it in another language.

6. repairs – When something needs repairs, it needs to be fixed.

7. heaving – Heaving is throwing something heavy with great effort.

8. bothersome – When something is bothersome, it bothers you and causes problems.

9. din – If there is a din, there is so much noise that it is hard to hear anything over it.

10. dodging – When you are dodging something, you avoid something that is coming toward you.

In math class this week, we will be reviewing for our second Math Benchmark Assessment which will be on Wed., Nov. 30^th. We will focus on all of the skills we have covered during the first and second nine weeks. In Grammar this week, we will discuss Singular and Plural Pronouns. This week we will continue our AMSTI Rocks and Minerals unit. We will focus on Chapters 7-9 in the Science book. Students received new reading logs for the month of November; these are due completed by THIS Friday. The completed November Math Calendars are due THIS Wednesday. For the month of November, we will be reading the book, Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman and discussing the character trait of perseverance and maintaining good friendships. If you have access to the Internet at home, you can research the author, Mary Hoffman, to learn more about her and her books.

Thanksgiving newsletter

Although we only have school two days this week, we still have our weekly newsletter available. Please review it with your child. Also, even while your child is out of school, please remember to review and study multiplication facts daily so that your child can do well on our multiplication tests and progress to the next level. Have a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Vocabulary

These words are just for fun to honor the holiday. We will use them for activities in class. No tests will be given this week!

3. pilgrim-someone who journeys in foreign lands.

4. turkey-large bird with fan-shaped tail, widely used for food.

In math class this week, we will continue discussing strategies students can use with their multiplication facts. We will focus on using repeated addition, skip counting, arrays, intersecting lines, and drawing pictures to solve multiplication problems. In Grammar this week, we will continue discussing Possessive Nouns. This week we will discuss the history of Thanksgiving during our Social Studies block. Students received new reading logs for the month of November. Please remember that reading logs MUST show a total of 60 or more minutes of reading per week. November has 4 weeks (we will not count the week of Thanksgiving), so that would be 60 x 4 = 240 minutes total for the month of November. For the month of November, we will be reading the book, Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman and discussing the character trait of perseverance and maintaining good friendships. If you have access to the Internet at home, you can research the author, Mary Hoffman, to learn more about her and her books.

Please study these definitions with your child and practice using each word in a sentence. The students will be given a quiz on Friday that requires them to correctly match each vocabulary word to a sentence.

1. swooned – If you had a terrible shock or surprise that made you faint or fall, you might have swooned.

2. astonished – When you are amazed and surprised by something, you are astonished.

3. envious – If you feel envious, you want something that someone else has.

4. rivalry – People who have rivalry are competing against one another for something.

5. encouraging – An encouraging word from a friend make you feel that you can do something well.

6. brief – If something is brief, it does not take much time.

7. chuckling – If you are chuckling, you are laughing quietly to yourself.

8. soothing – Something that is soothing makes you feel calm.

9. sobbed – Someone who sobbed cried very hard.

10. praised – If you praised someone, you told that person that he or she did something well.

Newsletter

Please remember that we will be out of school next Friday, November 11, for Veterans' Day. However, over the three day weekend, please continue to review and practice multiplication facts with your child. It is extremely important that they make progress with these and move forward with their weekly multiplication quizzes. Also, this week please be sure to review your child's vocabulary words. They need to not only know how to spell the vocabulary words, but also understand their definitions and have a grasp of how to use each word in a sentence.

Vocabulary - Review Week # 2

This week is another review week in Language Arts. We will continue to use these same vocabulary words this week. Study these words again, and we will give another vocabulary quiz on these words on Thursday of this week. The quiz will be in a different format than last week’s.

1. investigate – When you investigate something, you try to find out the truth about it.

2. expert – An expert is someone who knows a lot about a certain job.

3. laboratory- A place where experiments are done is a laboratory.

4. various – When there are various objects, there are objects of different types.

5. suspect – When you suspect someone of doing something, you think that person has done it.

6. confess – When you confess, you tell the truth about something you did wrong.

7. perplexed – When you are perplexed about something, you are confused about it

8. inquisitive – If you are inquisitive about something, you are curious about it.

9. inviting – If something looks inviting, you want to take part in it or have something to do with it.

10. amusing – If something is fun or funny, it is amusing.

In math class this week, we will begin Chapter 7 in the math book. We will be telling time, learning A.M. and P.M., figuring out elapsed time, and learning to read calendars and schedules. We are doing another week of review in Language Arts this week, so in Grammar we will continue to review all skills from Lessons 6-9 which includes simple and compound sentences, common and proper nouns, abbreviations, and singular and plural nouns. This week we will read and discuss Chapter 5 in our Communities books. Students received new reading logs for the month of November. Please remember that reading logs MUST show a total of 60 or more minutes of reading per week. November has 4 weeks (we will not count the week of Thanksgiving), so that would be 60 x 4 = 240 minutes total for the month of November. Please also remember that the monthly math calendars are now part of homework and must be completed by the deadline each month. These calendars are in addition to the FLIP-IT binder math pages the students must complete every Tuesday and Thursday. We are giving grades on these math pages, the math calendars, and the reading logs. Please be sure to help your child complete these on time so they will not receive zeros in these subjects. Math calendars and Reading Logs will receive monthly grades, and the FLIP-IT math pages are two grades per week.
