A Pen Pal for Max
Lesson 12 Vocabulary
Please study these definitions with your child and practice using each word in a sentence. The students will be given a quiz on Friday that requires them to correctly match each vocabulary word to a sentence or definition.
1. deciphered – If you have figured out a message that is difficult to understand or that is written in code, then you have deciphered it.
2. mistaken – If you are wrong about something, you are mistaken.
3. catastrophe – A catastrophe is something really terrible that has happened.
4. fortunate – If you are fortunate, you are very lucky.
5. translate – If you translate something, you say or write it in another language.
6. repairs – When something needs repairs, it needs to be fixed.
7. heaving – Heaving is throwing something heavy with great effort.
8. bothersome – When something is bothersome, it bothers you and causes problems.
9. din – If there is a din, there is so much noise that it is hard to hear anything over it.
10. dodging – When you are dodging something, you avoid something that is coming toward you.

From the Teacher:
In math class this week, we will be reviewing for our second Math Benchmark Assessment which will be on Wed., Nov. 30th. We will focus on all of the skills we have covered during the first and second nine weeks. In Grammar this week, we will discuss Singular and Plural Pronouns. This week we will continue our AMSTI Rocks and Minerals unit. We will focus on Chapters 7-9 in the Science book. Students received new reading logs for the month of November; these are due completed by THIS Friday. The completed November Math Calendars are due THIS Wednesday. For the month of November, we will be reading the book, Amazing Grace by Mary Hoffman and discussing the character trait of perseverance and maintaining good friendships. If you have access to the Internet at home, you can research the author, Mary Hoffman, to learn more about her and her books.
